Announcing Two Important National Projects

Curriculum Renewal for Interprofessional Education (IPE) in Health

Establishing a National Profile of Interprofessional Education (IPE) in Health in Australia

The University of Technology Sydney and ten partners (including AIPPEN)[1], have obtained funding from the Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC), Western Australian Health (WA Health) and Health Workforce Australia (HWA)  to undertake two important national projects in the area of health professional education. The two projects have been designed to conjointly contribute to the development of a national approach to interprofessional education (IPE) as a core element of the pre-registration curriculum across all health professions in Australia.

For the purposes of this project, IPE is defined as any educational activity explicitly designed to bring students from different health professions together to learn about, with and from each other.

The projects will produce and disseminate a range of resources that will:

1. Inform the development of health professional education curriculum: a curriculum framework, generic capability statements, learning outcomes and assessment methods

2. Provide new knowledge about IPE activity in Australia: a national profile of IPE activity

3. Guide and support curriculum change in IPE

4. Support the development of stronger links between a wide range of organisations and individuals engaged with IPE, health workforce development and interprofessional and team based practice in Australia

5. Contribute to a national discussion about the development of future health service provision and health workforce development in Australia.

Initial project activity will be developed in two areas. Firstly, a survey is currently being forwarded to all relevant universities, peak professional, registration, and government bodies, as well as NGO organisations in Australia. This will enable us to develop a national profile of existing IPE related curriculum activity. In conjunction with the survey, the Project Team is consulting with key higher education, professional, registration and other peak bodies involved in health service provision, health professional education and health workforce development.

If you are involved in the development and/or delivery of IPE in your institution, you are invited to participate in this project.
